Guatemala – Wikipedia General Information

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) of Guatemala is promoting sustainable management and protection of watersheds through different processes. The Law for the Protection and Improvement of the Environment establishes the obligation to promote the rational use and integrated management of water basins, springs, and water sources.

Since 2018, Guatemala has prioritized the micro-watersheds in the Motagua River basin. Furthermore, the basin is under the regulatory control of activities such as coffee and banana plantations, subdivisions, colonies, urbanizations or high-impact subdivisions, as well as commercial and industrial activity. The Department of Water Resources and Watersheds (DRHyC) has a Draft Watershed Regulation, as an instrument to regulate and organize the interventions that the different stakeholders carry out in the micro-basins.
